AMAZINGLY SHOCKING customer experience stories! (Part 9)

Written by Sonal Jaiswal | Evangelist, Customer Guru

This week, we have a very unique restaurant on our list – Tim’s Place, a very successful and unique restaurant in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is a one-of-its-kind restaurant because, along with its meals, it serves hugs too!

Read on to know more about this extraordinary restaurant.

Tim’s Place is run by Tim Harris, an accomplished Special Olympian, an excellent sailor and an experienced offshore fisherman. Tim also has Down syndrome. But that doesn’t stop him from running the ‘World’s friendliest restaurant’! The place serves American and Mexican cuisine, but they have a very special item on their menu. According to the website (Tim’s Place), the most sought after item on the menu is one that never gets cold, is sweet but not too sweet, guilt free, calorie free, and guaranteed to brighten anyone’s day … a free hug from Tim himself. The concept of the restaurant is breakfast, lunch, and hugs seven days a week!

Tim’s free hugs have reached everyone – right from the most powerful man in the world – Barack Obama, to the music legend Stevie Wonder. Tim has a counter on his wall that keeps track of the total number of hugs. Believe it or not, he has given out more than 60,000 hugs and the number is only going to increase!

Tim's Place

Here is what Tim has to say about this unusual service that his restaurant provides: “My favourite part of all is the people coming through the front door. My hugs are way more important than the food… The food is just food!”

Tim has also launched a powerful speaking career, travelling across the country telling his story and inspiring all those who cross his path. In order to truly share his success, in August of 2014 Tim started Tim’s Big Heart Foundation (TBHF), a newly formed New Mexico non-profit corporation that aims to inspire people from all over the world to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives via entrepreneurship and inclusion in their communities. Tim’s goal is to help other individuals with intellectual disabilities start their own business.

What an inspiring story of a person going against all odds and making the world a happier place to live in! And of being an unusually amazing example of excellent customer experience – something all of us should take inspiration from.
